Pupil and Iris Reconstruction Surgery
The iris is the coloured part of the eye, and the pupil is the opening at its centre that controls how much light enters. An injury, previous surgery or a condition present from birth can leave the pupil enlarged, irregular or off-centre, or leave a gap in the iris.
Pupil and iris reconstruction (pupilloplasty) repairs the iris to improve its appearance and reduce symptoms such as glare and light sensitivity. It is not a cosmetic procedure to change eye colour.
Who it's for
- People with an enlarged or irregular pupil after eye injury.
- Iris damage or a displaced pupil after previous eye surgery.
- Congenital iris defects, such as a coloboma (a gap in the iris).
- Symptoms of glare, light sensitivity or double images related to the iris, or concern about the eye's appearance.
How it works
- Assessment: a detailed examination of the iris, lens, cornea and retina, since many patients have other eye conditions that need treatment at the same time.
- Surgery: under local or general anaesthesia, fine stitches are used to close gaps or reshape the pupil. In some cases this is combined with other procedures, such as cataract surgery.
Recovery
- Redness, light sensitivity and blurred vision are common for the first few weeks.
- Drops are used for several weeks to control inflammation.
- Results depend on the amount of iris tissue remaining and the health of the rest of the eye. Your surgeon will discuss realistic expectations with you before surgery.
Frequently asked questions
Can this surgery change my eye colour?
No. This surgery repairs the existing iris. It is not a cosmetic procedure to change eye colour; cosmetic iris implants used for that purpose are associated with serious complications.
Will it improve glare?
Reducing the pupil size or closing an iris gap often reduces glare, but the degree of improvement varies.
Can it be done with cataract surgery?
Yes, in suitable cases both can be done in the same operation. Your surgeon will advise on the most suitable plan for your eye.
