Glaucoma, Diabetic Eye Disease and Retina Care

Glaucoma and diabetic eye disease can damage vision gradually, often without symptoms until the damage is advanced. Lost vision from glaucoma cannot be restored, so early diagnosis and regular follow-up make a real difference.

Glaucoma: we provide diagnosis, medical treatment (usually eye drops) and long-term follow-up. Treatment is chosen according to the type and stage of the condition. Some advanced cases may need other treatments; if so, your doctor will advise you and refer you where needed.

Retina: we provide diagnosis, medical treatment and follow-up for diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, and intravitreal injections (medicine injected into the eye) are available when indicated, for example for diabetic macular oedema or wet macular degeneration. We also diagnose and follow uveitis (inflammation inside the eye, including iritis).

Who it's for

  • People with diabetes: a yearly dilated retina check is generally recommended, or more often if changes are found.
  • People with raised eye pressure, a family history of glaucoma, or a suspicious optic nerve on a previous exam.
  • Adults over 50, especially with blurred or distorted central vision (a sign of macular disease).
  • Recurrent painful red eyes with light sensitivity, which may indicate uveitis, including iritis.
  • Sudden loss of vision, a curtain over vision, or new flashes and floaters: seek urgent care.

How it works

  1. Glaucoma: eye pressure measurement, assessment of the optic nerve, retinal nerve fibre scans (OCT) and visual field testing. Medical treatment, usually with eye drops, is chosen according to the type and stage of the condition, with regular follow-up. If your glaucoma needs other treatments, your doctor will advise you and refer you.
  2. Diabetic eye disease: dilated retina examination and scans to detect swelling or abnormal vessels. In selected cases, such as diabetic macular oedema, intravitreal injections are available when indicated. If you need a different treatment, your doctor will advise you and refer you. Good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol helps protect the eyes.
  3. Macular degeneration and uveitis: diagnosis with examination and imaging, then treatment and monitoring according to the type and severity. For wet macular degeneration, intravitreal injections are available when indicated.

Living with the condition

  • Most of these conditions need long-term follow-up. Keeping your appointments is as important as the treatment itself.
  • Use glaucoma drops exactly as prescribed, even when your eyes feel fine. Tell us if a drop causes side effects, rather than stopping it.
  • Bring a list of your medications and your latest diabetes test results to each visit.

Frequently asked questions

Can glaucoma be cured?

Glaucoma cannot be cured, and vision already lost cannot be restored. Treatment aims to slow or stop further damage, which is why early detection matters.

I see well. Do I still need a diabetic eye check?

Yes. Diabetic retinopathy can be present with good vision. Regular checks find changes early, when treatment is most effective.

What is an intravitreal injection?

It is a medicine injected into the eye with a very fine needle after numbing drops and cleaning, used for conditions such as diabetic macular swelling and wet macular degeneration. It is quick, but usually needs to be repeated. Your doctor will explain the benefits and risks, including the small risk of infection.

Does high eye pressure always mean glaucoma?

No. Some people have high pressure without nerve damage. Your doctor will assess your risk and decide whether treatment or monitoring is needed.
