Comprehensive Eye Examination

A comprehensive eye examination checks more than how well you see. It looks at the health of the whole eye, from the eyelids and cornea to the lens, retina and optic nerve. Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma and diabetic eye disease, cause no symptoms in their early stages.

At Prime Vision Clinic, your examination is carried out by our ophthalmologists and clinical team.

Who it's for

  • Anyone with blurred vision, eye strain, headaches with reading, or frequent changes in glasses.
  • People with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of glaucoma, who need regular eye checks.
  • Children with signs of vision problems, such as squinting, sitting close to screens, a turning eye or difficulty at school. Please contact the clinic so that we can arrange a suitable appointment and doctor based on your child's age and condition.
  • People considering LASIK, ICL or cataract surgery, as part of their assessment.
  • Adults who have not had an eye check for some time.

How it works

  1. History: your symptoms, general health, medications and family history.
  2. Vision and refraction: measuring your vision and glasses prescription.
  3. Eye pressure and front of the eye: a slit-lamp (microscope) examination of the lids, cornea and lens, and eye pressure measurement.
  4. Dilated retina examination: drops widen the pupil so the retina and optic nerve can be examined. Additional scans, such as OCT, are arranged when needed.
  5. Results: the doctor explains the findings and the next steps, including glasses, treatment or follow-up.

After your exam

  • If your pupils were dilated, your vision may be blurred and sensitive to light for several hours. Do not drive until it clears; bring sunglasses and, if possible, someone to drive you.
  • Bring your current glasses, contact lens details and a list of medications. Our team will tell you if you need to stop wearing contact lenses before your visit.
  • Please allow extra time: a full examination with dilating drops takes longer than a standard consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have an eye exam?

It depends on your age, health and eye history. People with diabetes are generally advised to have a dilated eye check at least once a year. Your doctor will recommend the right interval for you.

Do I need dilating drops?

Dilation gives the clearest view of the retina and optic nerve. It is recommended at a first full exam and for many conditions, but your doctor will advise whether you need it at each visit.

Why are eye checks important for children?

Early detection of problems such as lazy eye (amblyopia) and squint matters, because treatment is most effective at a young age. Please contact the clinic so that we can arrange a suitable appointment and doctor based on your child's age and condition.

Is an eye exam the same as a vision test for glasses?

No. A glasses test measures your prescription, while a comprehensive exam also checks the health of the eye.
