Oculoplastic surgery focuses on the eyelids, tear system and orbit, combining eye health with appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Each case is assessed by Dr. Manar Al-Wuhaib, Consultant in Oculoplastic Surgery, who explains the options, including when surgery is not needed.<\/p>\n<h2>Who it&#x27;s for<\/h2>\n<ul>\n  <li>Drooping upper eyelid (ptosis), especially if it blocks vision. In children, early assessment matters (see the questions below).<\/li>\n  <li>Excess upper or lower eyelid skin or puffiness (blepharoplasty).<\/li>\n  <li>An eyelid turning inwards (entropion), which makes the lashes rub the eye, or outwards (ectropion), which causes watering and irritation.<\/li>\n  <li>Lumps, cysts or growths on the eyelid, including chalazion that does not settle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How it works<\/h2>\n<ol>\n  <li>Consultation: an examination of the eyelids and eye, measurement of lid position and, where relevant, a visual field test. Photographs may be taken for your medical record with your consent.<\/li>\n  <li>Planning: the surgeon explains the procedure, the expected change, the risks and the alternatives.<\/li>\n  <li>Surgery: most adult eyelid procedures are done under local anaesthesia, sometimes with sedation. Children usually need a general anaesthetic. Eyelid growths that are removed are usually sent for laboratory examination.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Recovery<\/h2>\n<ul>\n  <li>Swelling and bruising are normal and usually improve over one to two weeks, though final results take longer to settle.<\/li>\n  <li>Cold compresses, sleeping with the head raised and the prescribed ointment help recovery.<\/li>\n  <li>Stitches, if not dissolvable, are usually removed after about a week.<\/li>\n  <li>Avoid heavy exercise, swimming and eye make-up for the period your surgeon advises.<\/li>\n  <li>Some asymmetry can occur, and in some cases a small adjustment may be needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pv-faq\">\n  <details>\n    <summary>Does a drooping eyelid in a child need early treatment?<\/summary>\n    <p>If the lid covers the pupil, it can affect visual development (amblyopia), so early assessment is important. The timing of surgery depends on the child&#x27;s vision and age. Ptosis, entropion and ectropion repair are usually functional. Blepharoplasty can be cosmetic or functional if heavy skin blocks vision.<\/p>\n  <\/details>\n  <details>\n    <summary>Will there be a visible scar?<\/summary>\n    <p>Incisions are usually placed in the natural eyelid crease or just below the lashes, so scars are usually hard to see once healed, but healing differs between people.<\/p>\n  <\/details>\n  <details>\n    <summary>Is a lump on the eyelid serious?<\/summary>\n    <p>Most are harmless, such as a chalazion or cyst.
